RUDI KULL & ALBERT WEINZIERL
THE MODERN MASTERS OF MUNICH
It’s hard to believe that 2011 marks the tenth anniversary of Rudi Kull and Albert Weinzierl’s first project together. After all, the result of that collaboration—Munich’s Cortiina Hotel—basically introduced the concept of the modern boutique hotel to the Bavarian capital. Everything that went into the hotel, from lamps to beds to ...

... coffee tables to barstools to, well, everything, was designed and crafted specifically for the property. Given this detail-oriented mindset, as well as an equally deep passion for all things culinary, it’s little surprise that, a decade after the Cortiina debuted, Rudi Kull and Albert Weinzierl have become the most acclaimed hoteliers and gastronomes in Munich. To date they have opened two hotels and six restaurants/bars here. Kull and Weinzierl met each other through a mutual friend in the mid-1990s. Kull had just returned from the United States, where he had studied gastronomy and gathered practical experience working at top restaurants in New York and Los Angeles. Weinzierl had been running an espresso bar at the time, though he had studied architecture. “This might sound strange, but there was an instant, deep trust that formed between us, a sort of ‘soul’ partnership,” explains Kull. What is the key to their success story you ask? “We feel the soul of a place,” Weinzierl says, “and only then do we try to figure out what we can do with it. It’s a bit like going to a tailor and getting a suit made.” Determined to make their second hotel a "place for world travelers by world travelers", the duo opened the LOUIS in 2009. For Louis’s restaurant, Kull and Weinzierl went to Japan and met with another world traveler—the hotel restaurant’s namesake, Emiko. At Emiko, one is offered a combination of traditional Japanese food and modern international cuisine, presented in a communal, sharing environment. Despite their success in Munich, the two are currently not working on new projects.
